If you’re new to Rummy or just want to refresh your understanding, this simple guide will walk you through the basics.

What is Rummy?

Rummy is a group of matching-card games based on the idea of forming sets (cards of the same rank) and sequences (consecutive cards of the same suit). The most common form of Rummy in India is 13-card Rummy, played with 2 decks of cards and jokers.

Objective of Rummy

The goal of the game is to arrange all your cards into valid combinations — at least two sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence (without a joker). The remaining cards can be arranged into sequences or sets.

Basic Terms to Know

Sequence: 3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 4♠ 5♠ 6♠).

Pure Sequence: A sequence formed without using a Joker.

Set: 3 or 4 cards of the same rank but different suits (e.g., 7♣ 7♦ 7♠).

Joker: Can substitute any card except in a pure sequence.

Drop: Option to quit a round if you have a poor hand.

How to Play Rummy Step by Step

1. Card Distribution

Each player is dealt 13 cards.

A card is selected randomly as the wild Joker for that round.

The rest of the cards form the closed deck, and one card is placed face-up to start the open deck.

2. Forming Combinations

Your aim is to create sets and sequences from your 13 cards.

You must form at least two sequences, and one must be pure.

Use wild Jokers to complete impure sequences or sets.

3. Taking Turns

On each turn, a player:

Draws a card from the open or closed deck.

Discards one card to the open deck.

This continues until a player declares.

4. Making a Declaration

When you’ve arranged your cards into valid sequences and sets, you can declare.

After declaring, you must arrange and submit your cards for validation.

If valid, you win. If invalid, you lose with a full penalty.

Winning the Game

To win, your hand must have:

At least two sequences

At least one pure sequence

Remaining cards forming valid sets or sequences

Example of a Winning Hand

Pure Sequence: 5♦ 6♦ 7♦

Impure Sequence: 9♣ 10♣ Joker

Set: K♠ K♦ K♥

Extra cards arranged into valid sets/sequences

Points System (for Points Rummy)

Winner gets 0 points.

Loser’s score is calculated based on the total value of ungrouped cards.

Face cards (J, Q, K, A) = 10 points each

Other cards = face value

Jokers = 0 points

Tips to Win at Rummy

1. Form a pure sequence early

2. Discard high-value cards if not useful

3. Use jokers wisely to complete sets

4. Keep an eye on your opponent’s picks

5. Practice regularly to improve your skills
